 VISION OF KAIO//

kaio is a coffeehouse and clothing shopcreated for young people. It is located downtown in the city of Perth .  The name is a Greek word which means “to light” or “to burn”. The heart of this ministry is to be a righteous light to reach this generation!

So, why a coffeehouse and clothing shop? Food and relationships are the ways to reach youth these days!  Young people tend to seek support in a community context. The coffeehouse creates a safe, dynamic, and non-threatening environment which appeals to youth.   A coffeehouse provides a central spot for young people to come and hang out and for our staff to build ongoing relationships and encourage them.  The menu is catered to young people’s taste and the décor is an urban style atmosphere.

CLOTHING SHOP//

fashion is a major way young people express who they are today.  Through the clothing shop we are implementing one our biggest values of 'championing the potential of young people'. We are giving young, local designers an opportunity to display and sell their work through Kaio! We see this as a platform to encourage young designers in their talent and help them to grow and develop it. Besides that, a retail shop is a major tool in drawing in different youth sub-cultures to Kaio.

ACTIVITIES//

through Kaio we hope to facilitate many activities in various streams of youth culture.  Our desire in all that we do is to see young people discover their God given identity and destiny!  Through the following, we hope to provide a platform for young people to express themselves and grow in their creativity.

    news

Its been a great couple of months at Kaio.  August and September have been real highlights and an incredible encouragement to all of us working with the ministry.  We have had the opportunity to build friendships with a lot of people coming through.. including sweet opportunities to really get to know different crew and be able to invest in their lives. Its also been really great to see the upward trend in the finances and the numbers of people coming through the doors.

A lot of new initiatives have kicked off over the last couple months... theres new art up on the walls, the back wall is now red, new menu items, new additions to our programs, different gigs have taken place...    So with the decor its been cool to see new art up including a mural up the stair case by our own Andrew Frazer.. all new stuff downstairs.. and now the next mission is new stuff upstairs.  We all had some involvement in transforming the back wall to red from the blue that it has been.  We ran a couple fundraising events over these months and were able to purchase a new couch as well as get our blender fixed.. next on the list is a new one!!!! Added lots of things to the menu.. new smoothies, new shakes, ranch dressing.... held a couple big weekends where we stayed open until people left... chill accoustic music downstairs on Sunday afternoons, youth bands upstairs.... its been great... We are wanting to get more young local designers involved in Kaio... so right now we have a new brand on sale - Broken Promises.. and looking to get more in.. moving away from the brands and finding a way to champion the potential of young local crew.

A few of our staff have moved on as well over the last couple weeks.  Emma and Mighty are involved in training schools, Ferg is back home in Ireland, Mattias is up in North Africa... Sneaky (Anne-Mieke) is on holidas as well right now...Holly is at home waiting for her visa to come through..  and then Andrew and Ash will be leaving soon to get married... so.. if you have a heart for youth and the cafe/retail scene we would love to hear from you.  We definitely have vision to take this model overseas and multiply Kaio through the nations.. so it could be a great vehicle for you to go into frontier missions with... just get in touch with us!!!!

October is going to be all about projects.. to increase profile.. marketing, advertising, networking.. all of it!!! To see our youth programs really gearing up... heading into Spring and Summer so it would be awesome to see more and more young crew coming through and hanging out with us.

Another thing we're looking at is getting our Kaio merchandise all over the world!! We have t-shirts as well as hoodies.. and if you are interested in supporting Kaio this could be a great way to go - get in touch with us and you can order t-shirts and hoodies and we can get them sent out to you.. jsut get in touch for all the details about size, colour, price...

If you're local then we'd love for you to come through and hang out and see ways to get involved! if you're overseas.. we really appreciate staying in touch with you and all your support!  Right now the staff supply is kind of thin so we're working it hard but loving it and loving what we are seeing happen - its  a real privilege to have the opportunity to invest in the lives of young crew of the city!

    testimonies

One of our nexwave staff met 4 young goth girls in the city and invited them back to Kaio for lunch. They hung out for ages and we got to chat with them and get to know them a bit. Turned out that two of the girls were girlfriends. As I was chatting with them and clearing up they told me that they thought Kaio was great and that they felt "so loved." I was so blown away! I said, " I helped to start Kaio and that's been our goal from the very beginning: that people would feel loved. You guys have totally made my day!" It was such an amazing encouragement to see how they got to experience something of God's love for them here//jess

Towards the end of the evening as we were getting ready to close an older man came in and asked us gently if Kaio was a Christian place. I told him that it was and he asked if it was possible for him to talk with one of us about his life and about the hardship he was facing. We sat down and chatted for half an hour and it was a joy to see the change in his mood as we were talking. He came in heavy-hearted sharing his need but left with a smile. Perhaps you have experienced how a person's eyes can tell you a lot about their condition. In this man's eyes I saw a cry for someone willing to listen, willing to care enough to sit down and let him share his need. He left Kaio with a smile and some of the burden lifted from his shoulders//Mattias
